Make the Most of your GMAT Prep Budget

At the beginning of the “Rescue” series, we advised you to take a practice GMAT test right away. By now, you’ve booked an appointment to take the test for real. You’ll be ready to submit your scores for Round One. Right?

But let me guess: your scores on the practice GMAT were not perfect, and you’ve been hoping the whole thing will somehow go away. It’s summer, you tell yourself, and you deserve a break.

Carsten Ley, an experienced GMAT coach, has spelled out five things you can do for yourself—starting today! Thanks, Carsten!

We’re happy to summarize Carsten’s five points:

1. Time saves money
Do the basic math and verbal review on your own.
2. Don’t worry; get started
Again, rev up those basic skills!
3. Don’t start with materials that are too difficult
Start with books on a beginning or intermediate level, before taxing yourself with advanced problems.
4. Practice “real”
Do entire blocks of problems, and time yourself. Don’t just dabble in individual problems.
5. Analyze yourself.
Identify your particular strengths and weaknesses.

Of course, you may well decide that you need the structure and the motivation that a GMAT coach or class provides. We’re not saying you should suffer through this alone. If you know you’re just procrastinating, or if you’re not getting the results you want by studying on your own—by all means, contact a GMAT training provider today!

Still, Carsten’s tips can help save you money. By following his advice, you’ll show up prepared to make the most of your trainer’s time.
