Who are you?

Today we’ll talk about what you can do to start making a list of the MBA programs to which you will apply. Many MBA applicants think this is all about the MBA programs. Surprise! It’s also about you.

Think of this as a negotiation. It’s not only about what the MBA programs want; it’s also about what you want. So before you reach for the rankings—why not start with you?

Make a list of what you bring to the table: your grades, GMAT scores and work experience. Remember to add any leadership experience you may have gained through military or community service. Have you lived or worked outside your home country? What languages do you speak, and how well? What about your personal life experience might be unusual?

Next, write down your goals. Where do you want to be in five years? In ten? Do you want to star in your current industry? Or do you want a complete career change? Are you sure? How do you know?

Now you have a clear snapshot of you: what you’ve done, where you are now, and where you want to go. Now you’re ready to research which MBA programs take people with your qualifications–and get them where you want to go.
